What is step down fostering?

All young people should have a secure family home. So that’s why we developed a step down programme. Step down is a type of foster care where a child previously living in a residential home setting has come to live with a foster family.

The Compass Community has a number of our own residential children’s homes across the country and we need carers to look after children who are assessed as ready to leave these homes and participate in family life.

This can be a difficult transition after long periods of living in a group setting. Even if a young person wants to live with a foster family, a new situation like this can be tricky for a child to get used to. Compass will support our foster parents and children across our entire organisation throughout this carefully planned process.

There are lots of reasons why children may find themselves in residential care; sometimes it’s simply because there are no foster placements available at the time when they need it. Their lives can often be drastically improved by living with a foster family.

We are experienced in enabling planned our transitions for young people within our Compass Children’s Homes to move onto Compass Fostering step down foster care with positive outcomes.

Could you give a young person the chance of a stable family home? Why not get in touch with us and we can answer any questions you may have.
