Celebrating Black History Month 2022

Every year, Black History Month is more important than ever, providing the opportunity to celebrate the ongoing achievements of black people in our community, throughout the UK and around the world. It's also a time for continued action in tackling racism and ensuring black history is represented, respected and celebrated year-round.
When Is Black History Month 2022?

Saturday the 1st of October will mark the first day of Black History Month UK 2022. The month’s origins can be traced back the era of the 1920s, to the formation of ‘Negro History Week’ in the United States and Canada. It was a week to focus on black history and culture, as it wasn’t included in the school curriculum.

Celebrating Our Community

At Compass, we know that Black History is yesterday, today and tomorrow.

We value the diversity of our foster carers and staff, and work hard to tackle inequality and discrimination within our community. We know that progress requires action, not just words – and our Anti-Racist G.R.A.C.E. group is testament to this.

Traditionally, Black History Month in October has centred on celebrating key figures and events in history. This year, though, with the help of our G.R.A.C.E. group, we want to take our 2022 Black History Month theme further. For 2022’s Black History Month, we want to take the opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions that Black people make to the UK every day.

That’s why we’re encouraging Black people of all ages, from all walks of life, to share their stories and experiences with us. We’ll be sharing these stories throughout the month of October across our social media platforms, celebrating our community and ensuring we celebrate the Black history of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
