Fostering With a Disability
While there are some considerations to bear in mind, your ability to foster depends largely on the nature of your disability, how it affects your daily life, and whether you are capable of meeting the needs of the child.
Can I Foster With a Disability?
If you’ve ever wondered, “can I foster with a disability?” the answer is a resounding yes — fostering with a disability is absolutely possible. Many people with disabilities make fantastic foster parents, providing love and support to children in need.
The fostering assessment process involves a thorough review of multiple factors, including your physical and mental wellbeing. This doesn’t mean that having a disability will immediately disqualify you — far from it. When you apply to become a foster carer, any disabilities or health conditions will be taken into account to ensure that they won’t hinder your ability to care for a child. The key focus here will be on your support network, your personal capabilities and willingness to adapt if needed.

At Compass, we will never burden you beyond your capacity.
What to Expect During the Fostering Assessment
As part of our standard fostering assessment, all potential foster carers are required to undergo a medical evaluation with a qualified GP. This assessment helps to determine whether or not your disability or health condition will in any way affect your ability to foster. The evaluation considers your overall health, whether or not you have help from a partner, and any other limitations that might have an impact on your day-to-day life.
Which Arrangement Is Right for You?
Regardless of your disability, there are various types of fostering to suit different situations and needs:
- Short-term fostering: Ideal for children requiring a safe place to stay whilst longer-term plans are being made.
- Long-term fostering: For those seeking to provide a stable, long-term home for children who cannot return to their birth families.
- Respite fostering: Temporary care to offer a child’s primary carer a break.
- Emergency fostering: Care for a child at short notice in the event of unplanned emergencies.
