Compass Wales and Madlug Join Forces for Children in Care

At Compass, we believe every child deserves to feel valued and supported. That’s why we are proud to collaborate with Madlug, a social enterprise dedicated to giving dignity to children in care.

Madlug was founded in 2015 by Dave Linton after he learned a heartbreaking truth: many children in care have their belongings moved in nothing more than black bin bags. For Dave, a youth worker of over 20 years and a foster carer himself, this symbol of disposability was unacceptable. With just £500 and no business experience, he set out to change that.

That change became the Madlug Movement, built on the simple but powerful idea of “Buy One, Wear One, Help One.” For every bag purchased, Madlug gives a pack-away travel bag to a child in care, ensuring they can carry their belongings with dignity. Since starting, Madlug has provided over 130,000 bags to children across the UK.

But Madlug is more than just a bag company. It’s a brand that, in Dave’s words, “shows love without words.” The movement raises awareness of the realities of the care system, champions young people, and offers them opportunities such as work experience. By doing so, it highlights the value and potential of every child in care.

Madlug works directly with local authorities, charities, and foster carers to ensure their bags reach those who need them most. Their mission is clear: no child should ever have to move with a bin bag again.

Ten years on, the vision continues to grow. Madlug is building a community of “Madluggers” – individuals and organizations proud to stand alongside children in care. As demand grows, so does their commitment to spreading awareness, creating quality products, and inspiring others to carry the message forward.

Recently, Madlug collaborated with Compass Wales to provide custom branded products for Cardiff Pride, celebrating inclusivity while raising awareness for children in care. Hellen Taylor, Head of Fostering for Compass Wales, has supported Madlug for over 10 years, beginning in her role as a Local Authority Social Worker. For Hellen, ensuring children are treated with dignity has always been a priority, and she has continued to drive this forward through Compass.

Madlug’s journey reminds us that small actions, like buying a bag, can create a ripple effect of dignity, hope, and belonging for children who need it most.
