Social Worker Week: The People Who Stand Beside Our Foster Families
Foster parents are often described as the people who change children’s lives.
And they do.
But behind every foster family is another person whose job is to make that life-changing work possible: the supervising social worker.
They are the steady presence in the background – the person at the end of the phone, the person who helps foster parents make difficult decisions in tough situations, and the person who helps hold everything together when things become complex.
As part of Social Work Week, we spoke with Rebecca Dolman and Tina Morris, Assistant Directors of Fostering at Compass, about the social workers who stand beside our foster families every day.
The professional who stands beside the foster parent
In every fostering household, there is a network of professionals working together around a child – teachers, therapists, local authority teams and social workers.
But the Supervising Social Worker has a unique role.
“They are often the lifeline for foster parents,” Rebecca explains. They are the person foster parents turn to when they need advice, reassurance or simply someone who understands the situation they are facing.”
Fostering can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be emotionally demanding, unpredictable and complex. When those moments arrive, social workers help bring perspective.
“They help foster parents step back, think clearly and feel confident in the decisions they are making,” Rebecca says.
That professional support allows foster parents to focus on what matters most – caring for the child in their home
The one person there specifically for the carer
Many professionals work around a child in care. Each plays an important role.
But the Supervising Social Worker is the one person whose focus is specifically on supporting the foster parent.
“Everyone in the network is rightly focused on the child,” Tina explains. “But the supervising social worker is the person who stands beside the carer.” That means advocating for them, helping them navigate complex systems, and making sure their voice is heard within the wider professional network.
“Fostering can sometimes feel like a maze of meetings, expectations and decisions,” Tina says.
“Social workers help foster parents navigate that, so they feel confident and supported.”
And when foster parents feel supported, children experience the stability they need to thrive.
Challenging the myths about supervising social work
There is a common misconception that supervising social work is all about sitting in living rooms having tea and a chat. Rebecca laughs at that idea.
“People imagine us sitting in living rooms drinking tea,” she says. “In reality, supervising social workers are balancing safeguarding, supporting foster parents, understanding trauma and working with multiple professionals – often all at the same time.”
The role requires professional skill and adaptability to meet the needs of every fostering family.
“You’re supporting the child, the foster parent and often the whole household,” Tina adds. “That takes real judgement.”
What makes a great social worker?
According to Rebecca and Tina, the best supervising social workers share a few essential qualities.
Patience.
Flexibility.
Professional curiosity.
Reliability.
But above all: consistency.
“For some children and foster parents, the supervising social worker becomes one of the most constant people in their lives,” Rebecca says. “Being steady and dependable really matters.”
A message to our social workers this Social Worker Week
When asked what they would say to Compass social workers this Social Worker Week, Rebecca and Tina were clear.
“The commitment and care you show every day has a profound impact on children, young people and foster families.” And perhaps most importantly:
“Never underestimate the difference you make.”
Because while foster parents may be the Life Changers, social workers are often the ones quietly making that life-changing work possible every single day.
