Potential, Not Perfection: Safina and Suliman’s Story

Compass Foster carer recruitment team recognised the potential in Safina and Suliman and encouraged them to go ahead and push that green button!

Having overcome some personal hurdles in the past, they were able to use these experiences throughout the recruitment process. With support from the team and by taking part in relevant training courses, they were able to widen their knowledge on the day-to-day role of fostering as well as meet other Foster Carers in their area.

They have worked closely with the family finding team, and Safina and Suliman have since welcomed siblings of 2 children into their home.

“I really enjoy fostering and making that difference to the little hearts in my care. From when the children first came to live with us to now, you can really see the difference and how they have grown and progressed. There has been a massive change in behaviour, it was quite challenging in the beginning, but we worked together to find what it was that triggered the child and what the trigger points were in order to find a good coping mechanism that worked best for the children.

 It resulted in us making them a calming tent with some sensory toys which helps them calm down when needed and they know they are welcome to sit in the tent whenever they feel they need to.

I believe it is very important for the child to have boundaries set into place as it will help both them and their carer. Having that understanding with my foster children has allowed us to get along better and in a more positive way. I truly believe every child deserves a family, love and a place to call home and I am happy to say my foster children can say they’ve got all three.”
