Types of Fostering

Parent and Child Fostering at Compass

Above all, Parent and Child Fostering aims to keep families together. The arrangement is often used by Local Authorities to assess a parent's ability to care for their child. Successful arrangements result in families moving into independent or supported housing, and ultimately lead to successful lives together.
What Is Parent and Child Fostering?

Parent and Child Fostering is a unique and specialised fostering arrangement where an infant or toddler is taken into foster care alongside their mother and/or father. This form of fostering is designed to support parents in developing essential parenting skills, working towards securing a better outcome for both parent(s) and child.

Our Parent & Child Arrangements

Compass is proud to provide two different types of Parent and Child fostering arrangements. While each option will differ slightly in execution, both benefit from continuous support and comprehensive therapeutic involvement:

  • Progress meetings at 6 and 10 weeks
  • Foster Carer ParentAssess
  • Observational Skills training
  • Weekly recordings and updates

  • Full court-approved Parenting Capacity Assessment
  • Monthly updates provided to the Local Authority
  • Daily and weekly recordings completed by foster carers using ParentAssess
  • Bespoke therapeutic support for parents
Parent and Child fostering goes beyond just mother and baby fostering. It includes arrangements with fathers and children or even both parents and their child."

Jen’s Story

In this featured video, she talks to us about her experience in foster care, and how – with the help of her foster carer – she has developed into a confident, capable and happy parent.

What Should I Expect from a Parent & Child Fostering Arrangement?

Throughout your fostering arrangement with us, we will strive to maintain an open and honest relationship with you, addressing your concerns and worries, and providing the support you require. We will also consider additional factors including previous experiences, substance abuse and mental health in your overall assessment and seek to tailor your support accordingly. Here are some other things you can expect from a P&C arrangement:

  • Weekly or fortnightly visits from your foster carer’s Supervising Social Worker
  • Periodic visits from your Local Authority social worker
  • Review meetings where you can have your say
  • Support with budgeting, cooking and shopping
  • Support sessions with a Therapeutic Practitioner (for Comprehensive P&C arrangements)

What is a therapeutic practitioner?

A therapeutic practitioner is someone who will support you and your family’s emotional wellbeing. Think of them like a knowledgeable friend who not only understands your feelings, but knows exactly how to navigate complex challenges. These professionals are skilled in supporting families through difficult times, aiding both children and parents in managing stress and significant changes.
