You may be wondering, why is foster care required? Lots of families foster and the experience is different for everyone.
Children come into foster care for a number of reasons, this could be the result of neglect, abuse, family breakdown or illness. Although every child is unique, they are likely to miss their birth family, and have all suffered from loss.
Unfortunately the number of children who become looked after far exceeds the levels which local authorities are able to support. In 31 March 2017 there were 72,670 looked after children, an increase of 3% on 2016. This is why independent fostering agencies are required to offer extra support and facilities to foster families and children nationally. As a private agency, Compass Fostering works closely with local authorities to help to try and provide the best outcomes for children and young people in need.
Fostering is a way of providing looked after children and young people with a caring and nurturing environment, during a period where their own family is unable to look after them. This is often only a temporary arrangement, and many fostered children return to their birth families once the problems that caused them to come into foster care have been sorted out. Sometimes however, they may stay living with their foster family for many years as it is the best place for them to be.
We are looking for adults who want to make a lifestyle choice to foster and are committed to encouraging the children and young people they care for to thrive in every area of their development. A foster carer would be expected to promote education, social awareness, health and hygiene and provide an enriching lifestyle with good role models for children to aspire to. You should be able to communicate with young people in an age appropriate and understanding way. A good foster carer will be able to put boundaries in place to manage their behaviour in a positive way, to enable children to grow up to be well adjusted adults.
